Professor Laura Serrant OBE created the poem You Called …And We Came to reflect the contribution of the Caribbean people

Marking the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush to Britain

The 22nd June 2023 is the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush in Britain. The ship transported Caribbean men, women and children to rebuild Britain after the Second World War.

Our member, Professor Laura Serrant OBE, created the poem You Called …And We Came to reflect the contribution of the Caribbean people, including her own parents, and to honour their fortitude. An excerpt of Laura’s poem is included in the Windrush Memorial at Waterloo Station. You can watch here as she recites her poem and read about its inclusion in the memorial.
