We had a Ball..

What a wonderful weekend we had in Vienna celebrating the 10th Anniversary of IWF Austria! From the opening reception addressed by the First Lady of Austria and by Erika Freeman (96 years, one of the original members of IWF NY 50 years ago), private visits to wonderful venues and wonderful entertainment - including the surprise performance from the Vienna Girls Choir…

So much represented by the image above, clockwise Top L-R

All together now; wonderful celebration dinner at Bristol Hotel - a full house and wonderful exchanges; some ladies you may recognise; Vienna Girls Choir perform for IWF members and guests; Geraldine Sharpe-Newton and Erika Freeman one of the original members of IWF New York, now back in Vienna where she was born.

Absolutely Fabulous! Congratulations IWF Austria - and thank you!

These openings will include Chair and Company Secretary, as Suzanne is term limited and is due to step down as Secretary in July and Marty has indicated she will not be standing again for the Chair role.

With the upcoming 2026 Cornerstone Conference amongst other events in the pipeline, this is a great time to join the board of this fantastic forum of amazing women, to share your skills and experience in leading IWF UK.

Descriptions of the roles and responsibilities of the positions can be found in the IWF UK Governance document under Strategy, Governance and Privacy in the Members section of the website.

Marty and Suzanne are happy to have a conversation with you about making a nomination and/or if you are interested in either role.

Progress Update - Racial Equity Mentoring programme https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2024/04/19/progress-update-racial-equity-mentoring-programme Fri, 19 Apr 2024 10:57:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2024/04/19/progress-update-racial-equity-mentoring-programme

Mentors in these six-month-long programmes are IWF members and the mentees are typically mid-career professional women from diverse ethnic backgrounds who have been encouraged to apply by our members.

Last October saw the start of our second Racial Equity Mentoring scheme, with a cohort of 12 mentees being paired with IWF UK member mentors. This programme was first developed in 2022 through our Racial Equity Special Interest Group, chaired by Christine Brown-Quinn. This year, the SIG is co-chaired by Janet Collyer and Alexandra Thomas.

Prospective mentees are nominated by IWF UK members and are mid-career professionals from a wide variety of industry and sector backgrounds. The mentors and mentees are matched by the RE Mentoring sub-group, based on what mentors can offer and what mentees are looking for in terms of guidance and career path, using a questionnaire they complete. Pairs meet 4 to 6 times, in person and/or online, and the mentoring is encouraged to be reciprocal.

The Racial Equity Special Interest Group have facilitated online feedback sessions separately for mentors and mentees. These were helpful in shaping further activities and involvement for mentees and support for mentors, gaining feedback on how to improve the programme and have also helped to understand the personal impact the programme has had on mentees and mentors.

Mentees tell us that mentoring has particularly helped in linking them with role models, understanding what others’ career pathways have been, how to network, how to shape goals and model CVs. The mentoring has also provoked challenge and triggered fresh thinking on what personal choices are made and why. One mentee spoke of a “wake-up call”, another talked about how she had “almost given up” and that the conversations with her mentor had “energised” her.

There was overwhelming agreement that some of the key barriers to career progression experienced by our mentees are around social mobility and gaining access to networks and people to “make it happen”. As a result, with the support of Marty Rolle, IWF UK Chair, and the IWF board, we have been able to open some places for mentees at key IWF events to leverage the power of the IWF network.

Feedback from our current mentor cohort was similarly about making use of knowledge and expertise within IWF for specific mentee issues. We have encouraged mentors to reach out either via the subcommittee or directly to their peers in IWF to do this.

A special shout out goes to all IWF mentors and sponsors to date as we have seen a total of 22 mentees over the last two years take part. Also thanks to the Racial Equity SIG subcommittee - Nicolina Andall, Monika Biddulph, Alexandra Thomas, and Alison Maitland - for organising this year’s programme, and to Marty Rolle, Christine Brown-Quinn, and all of the board for their support. More to come in further newsletters on the programme’s impact and participants!

If you are interested in being a future mentor, (or nominate a future mentee) please contact Alison Maitland, or for general info on the programme, contact Nicolina Andall. More info on the Racial Equity SIG is also available by reaching out to Alexandra Thomas or Janet Collyer.

All can be contacted via racialequitysig@iwforumuk.org

Being part of the International Conversation whether you are ‘there’ or not.. https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2024/02/15/being-part-of-the-international-conversation-whether-you-are-there-or-not Thu, 15 Feb 2024 16:50:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2024/02/15/being-part-of-the-international-conversation-whether-you-are-there-or-not

With almost seventy members from IWF France, Ireland and UK descending on London for Friday and Saturday events, crowned by a wonderful dinner in the City. The dinner also provided the opportunity to meet and entertain special guests including Carolyn Carter-Starr, IWF’s Global President, and members of IWF South Africa’s leadership. A really warm international experience.

I say ‘get back to..’ as, for some of our longer standing members, this has been a key element of IWF UK’s offer for many years with Forum-to-Forum visits to Israel, Sweden, Dublin, Belfast, Lille, and Paris to mention but a few. These events have not only strengthened the ties between our Forum and others but provided unique insights into how others live, lead and work together. This is invaluable in forming life-long relationships. We are already plotting future forum-to-forum visits so watch this space.

Of course, it is not always possible to have the time, resources or space in the diary to get away for days or longer. But you can still access our wonderful Forum network on an as needed on a bespoke basis. Visiting a city elsewhere on business or for pleasure, including places not so far, like Dublin, Belfast or Oxford, Exeter or Canterbury for that matter? Then tap into our membership in that location through our IWF UK heatmap or the membership roster on the IWF Connect web portal. You can search by country, forum and, in many cases, city or you can approach the Forum leadership or administrator directly. The secret of this roster is to have your profile up-to-date, including your contact details. It is amazing how generous our sisters are with their own time, and in welcoming international members to join their local activities.

And of course, IWF UK members reciprocate by entertaining members from overseas when they visit us in the United Kingdom whether for work, leisure or just passing through. And if travel is not possible to you for any reason, then the membership roster allows you to set up your own calls or zoom/FaceTime meetings. We’ll be setting up group sessions too. Would you like to host an event with another forum on-line as part of your SIG - contact Ailbhe Fallon and we’ll work together to make it happen.

Our International network is part of what makes us unique - that and our wonderful members.

Make sure you make time to enjoy it!

Next year IWF Austria celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Below is more information from our sisters in IWF Austria about their anniversary events in March, to which we are all invited.

About the Celebration

IWF Austria was founded in 2014 to give accomplished female leaders, with exceptional careers in Austria, the opportunity to get to know each other and participate in the worldwide network of IWF Global. Currently, the Forum has over 90 members.

Our 10th anniversary in 2024 is planned to be an event for IWF Austria members, as well as members of the IWF Global community. Three years ago, on the initiative of IWF Austria, a working group of European IWF presidents (plus Turkey and Israel) was established to strengthen the IWF network across Europe and thus become a more active part of IWF Global.

Historically, Vienna has always been a city where people from different cultures liked to meet. Its positive and open-minded atmosphere is part of its cultural identity. We want to follow that tradition and offer a program which combines cultural highlights with casual, yet elegant events.

Therefore, we took the opportunity to invite members of the other European forums, as well as the IWF Global Board to celebrate this milestone. We feel honoured that IWF Global President Carolyn Carter and other Global Board Members have agreed to come to Vienna.

This celebratory weekend in Vienna will set this event apart from other international IWF conferences, and strengthen the relationship between the European IWF network and IWF Global.

We are encouraging members partners to join the celebration and have tried to keep the Celebration Fee at an moderate level.

To register to take part please visit www.10years.iwf-austria.org.

World Leadership Conference, Detroit https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/10/22/world-leadership-conference-detroit Sun, 22 Oct 2023 14:30:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/10/22/world-leadership-conference-detroit

More than 700 leaders from 22 countries gathered to reflect on how creativity and culture shape our economy and our world, tackling such topics as artificial intelligence and what it means for the future of humanity; the transformation of transportation and its implications for the climate; and how our environment shapes our brains and bodies even before birth.

This was my first conference as a member of IWF - wow! I was thankful for the care and the thought that went into producing such an impactful experience. I was inspired by the diversity of women from all corners of the world, powerful and influential – yet a smile and a hello from everyone without exception.

Here were my key takeaways:

  • AI is here to change the world. Embrace it. However, guard your personal data jealously
  • Love based leadership is critical and will be so – more and more leaders are choosing to lead with love
  • We all have a responsibility to be more inclusive of others – who have different experiences, abilities, outlooks, etc than we do
  • In IWF we have a world full of powerful, influential and diverse women who are on a mission to change the world – knowing this, we can have hope
  • Music, poetry and movement can influence, speak truth to power and promote wellbeing

Leadership Stories: Miranda Sharp https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/10/10/leadership-stories-miranda-sharp Tue, 10 Oct 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/10/10/leadership-stories-miranda-sharp What does leadership mean to you, and how has your approach or style changed over time?

As the tall one and an older sister I never had to strive for leadership but retained a gentle surprise when people followed me. (My siblings were quick to point out that I had no special skills, I just was more practised at mostly doing the right thing.)

I attended formal leadership training with a keen interest in the scientific theories and stories people told but I had played under enough sporting captains to know that leadership could be exercised from any position and with any level of formal authority.

I remember keenly the moment I could describe my leadership ethos for the first time. We were taking a long holiday in an RV (camper van) around Colorado and we stopped in at the Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming. I took an audio guide about the depiction of females which started with their absence, because artists were first engaged on hunting expeditions where the target of the paying customer was the many pointed stag or the gnarly alpha male on top of a rock.

The story moved on to the depiction of mothers as protectors which jarred uncomfortably for me as it was only 6 months since my son had died. Suddenly overcome with grief, I was aware that I was in an alien environment out of sight of the rest of my family, without a purpose, role or any idea how someone in my position should behave once they had stopped being the object of pity. I was also very aware that bereaved mothers have a bad reputation in literature, often depicted as mad, angry and sad, notably Clytemnestra, Demeter and Niobe in Greek myth.

And then I saw her. A small statue of a mountain lion, leading a hunt. I approached her from behind, her upright ears and curled tail both signalling to her troop and ensuring her perfect understanding of the surroundings. We can trust her and she will listen to us, but now is the time to be still before we complete the mission. I dared not move. Here, right here, was my model of leadership, I felt empowered to go and conquer the world.

I have found consensual leadership with skilled experts to come much more naturally to me than any form of directive style. I struggled at the start of my career as the posh English graduate in a factory in a mining community in Scotland or with striking posties at Royal Mail. Over time, I learned that everyone struggled and that I could normally find a quiet moment with one of the team who wanted to talk to me, though they normally started with the rugby.

More recently I have struggled to find a way of telling people that I am human, that I have known tragedy and that it hasn’t all come easily and naturally. I have avoided telling people about being bereaved because I don’t always want to be sad. I’d rather be efficient and functional sometimes. Also, by telling people that my son died when he was 5 leaves them with very few safe ways out of the conversation and normally leads them to a dark place where they are overtaken by their emotions as they process how they would feel.

I hope I have become more flexible with my leadership approaches over time and more thoughtful in my interventions. I recognise my ability to derail conversations and other people's learning by interrupting to ask a question or being unable to resist a funny observation.

What have been the biggest challenges and the biggest successes in your life, and what have you learned from them?

I cannot tell you how proud I am of my remaining son. Walking with him on our grief journeys hasn’t been in any way easy but watching him flourish brings me joy and pride every day. When people seek my advice now I am slower to offer it and much keener to listen to the story they are telling first.

I am thrilled too with the business portfolio I am building. I have turned my inability to focus on one thing into an asset for the multiple interesting projects I get to work on. My mission has been to get people to think of data as a business asset. Ever since I tried to run a business responsible for the curation of the postcode address file, I have been at odds with open data campaigners who were arguing that I should be giving it away for free. Now I’m glad to be at the forefront of the more mature and nuanced debate about different business models.

What advice do you have for younger women aspiring to leadership roles?

You can do leadership in many, many different ways. You can copy someone you admire or adopt the style you believe can be successful in the world you know but think about how your skills and experience will mean that you do it authentically for you.

Everyone is winging it, everyone has imposter syndrome and some of the worst behaviours are the result of insecurity.

Have a strong hinterland, things that matter to you outside work. Have a good reason to leave work sometimes. It focuses you and makes you more interesting for, and interested in the next job.

I have turned my inability to focus on one thing into an asset for the multiple interesting projects I get to work on. My mission has been to get people to think of data as a business asset.

Leadership Stories: Sally Bridgeland https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/08/10/leadership-stories-sally-bridgeland Thu, 10 Aug 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/08/10/leadership-stories-sally-bridgeland What does leadership mean to you, and how has your approach or style changed over time?

A leader is someone who I follow joyfully. Someone who has made the purpose of my work clear and given me the flexibility to do my part in a way which suits how I work best.

As a leader of an actuarial team over thirty years ago, I expected everyone to be able to do what I could do, and to do it in the way that I did it. I was very specific and deliberate in giving instructions.

Working with more diverse teams challenged that leadership style and has evolved into one which works better for both members of the “drama club” and members of the “chess club”, which is my shorthand for neurodiversity. The key is to tailor your style to the people that you are leading and the type of mission that you’re on. Actuarial trainees are generally good at a “chess club” way of working, where the leader is directive and the moves and rules are clear.

In my CEO role, I learned to be more “drama club” by gathering the cast together and telling them the story of what the happy ending looks like. I also describe the twists and turns which might present themselves. If an experienced, knowledgeable and diverse team knows where you want to go, they can point themselves in the right direction and can add some magic that you weren’t expecting. An empowered team where people know that you’re available to nudge things in the right direction is essential when you are working part time, or in today’s hybrid work settings.

The one constant is making sure I don’t take myself too seriously, and as a team, that we make the time to have fun together.

What have been the biggest challenges and the biggest successes in your life, and what have you learned from them?

The biggest challenge, by a long way, has been going through IVF for a decade before becoming a mother. It has taught me patience, resilience, determination and how to deal with disappointment. I move on from setbacks very quickly. It has also taught me that everyone around me may be going through similar challenges and heartbreak in a way which is completely hidden; to tread gently and to be there.

Of course there’s been a good few doses of chauvinism along the way. My worst experience was a university internship in Switzerland in 1984 (only 11 years after women started voting) where my supervisor honestly believed that women couldn’t do maths. I was working on some knotty fluid mechanics equations so that was a bit of a challenge. He shouted a lot. That calibrated my scale for sexist behaviour - working in London was never that bad!

Most of the obvious successes - from coming top in my first year at maths at Imperial College and passing all the actuarial exams without failing, through to more public awards for part-time working and this year’s NED award - were complete surprises. I’ve learned that the best way to build someone’s confidence is an unexpected compliment!

My successes in business - negotiations and innovations - all took longer than I expected. I had to wait for a change in someone at the top to take the opportunity to try something different. Other innovations, despite being brilliant and completely logical, simply didn’t catch on. So I have learned that timing matters; understanding the market environment that you’re playing into matters; getting stakeholders lined up matters; knowing who really makes decisions matters. And you may need patience, persistence and a bit of luck.

What advice do you have for younger women aspiring to leadership roles?

Don’t wait to be asked. If you see something that you think you can do well and that you’re passionate about, then ask for help in getting there. As a woman, sometimes you are less visible or obvious - or men may even hold back from asking you. Ask nicely and people will be delighted to support you. There were a couple of times in my life when I did that, and it led to wonderful opportunities to serve my profession and broaden my network in the City of London. In turn this led to some of the non-executive directorships I have today.

Learn to live without feedback. As a leader, you’ll have to have confidence in your own judgement. It’s tough at the top, but easier if you have weaned yourself off the constant appraisal and grading that we get used to at school and in our early years at work.

Be different. Grasp opportunities to take the less trodden paths - what seems like a sideways or even backwards move will take you upwards over time. Build your experience and network to differentiate yourself from the many others who see themselves as leaders. Having great technical qualifications and formal business credentials is only the start.

Know yourself. Don’t try to be a man. Don’t beat yourself up about not being as good as your favourite role model. Know your strengths and play to them: focus on the things that you are good at, passionate about and which are valued by the people around you. Know your weaknesses and make sure there’s someone who can cover those off: it’s what diverse teams are all about.

The key is to tailor your style to the people that you are leading and the type of mission that you’re on.

Leadership Stories: Jenny Burns https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/08/10/leadership-stories-jenny-burns Thu, 10 Aug 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.iwforumuk.org/news/2023/08/10/leadership-stories-jenny-burns What does leadership mean to you, and how has your approach or style changed over time?

For me, leadership is about influencing and guiding others towards a shared goal. It entails having a clear vision, making decisions responsibly, and being accountable for both successes and failures. Effective leaders communicate well, act with integrity, and demonstrate empathy. They empower their team, adapt to change, and are resilient in the face of challenges. At its essence, leadership is not just about authority but about serving others and bringing out the best in them.

Over 26 years, I’ve undergone significant shifts in perspectives and methodologies, which have stemmed from personal growth and the accumulation of varied life experiences, which have helped me have a richer understanding of the world. The rapid technological advancements of recent decades have reshaped how I communicate, gather information, and tackle everyday tasks. Moreover, societal values and cultural norms have evolved, so for example I’ve placed an increasing emphasis on things like diversity and of course, inclusion and the importance of both in leadership and business success. Moving through different life stages, different career opportunities and different challenges also gives you a different perspective. I’ve always been empathetic in my approach, but now I can really put myself in people’s shoes having experienced so much and it really helps when supporting people to succeed and be their best.

What have been the biggest challenges and the biggest successes in your life, and what have you learned from them?

I’ve had a career of two unequal halves. The first in big corporate, often global, organisations and the second for the last 6 years as a CEO of a start-up to scale up. I rose the ranks of corporate life and became the Group Brand Director of a well-known insurer. I’d say this was my biggest success and biggest challenge. I’m a non-conformist often looking for how things can be improved and done better, I hate bureaucracy and hierarchy especially if they get in the way of getting things done, so it’s a miracle I ‘survived’ for so long in large companies. That said, I look back on that part of my career fondly because I learnt so much about how to navigate stakeholders, deal with politics and moreover, how to influence. Being able to influence senior people is critical in any walk of life and any level. A big part of being able to influence is to be able to tell impactful stories. We often say in the innovation industry that it’s not the best ideas that win, but the best stories.

What advice do you have for younger women aspiring to leadership roles?

Leading on from the above, my biggest piece of advice for anyone, but particularly women, is to learn the art of impactful and compelling storytelling. We know storytelling can move people. A good story, told well, can persuade people to act. Persuasion is the centrepiece of business activity. It can convince consumers to buy a product or service, employees to buy into a new programme, purpose, brand or strategic plan, investors to part with hard-earned cash, and a leader to invest in an initiative that’s going to bring value to a business.

The ability to share compelling and engaging stories is probably the most under-utilised business skill. At a time when things around us are dramatically changing fast, business leaders are in a prime position to lead the charge and help people navigate change.
